Goodness gracious, dear doctors…

According to GMOA, at least 25% of currently active doctors in the government health system have completed the necessary examinations for employment in foreign countries such as the UAE, Oman, the UK, and Australia.

Dr Chamil Wijesinghe, GMOA Media Spokesman, says, “Nearly 5,000 Sri Lankan doctors have now passed the exams and are contemplating migration.” He said the majority of migrating Sri Lankan doctors seek employment in Australia and the United Kingdom and are leaving with their families.

This trend has resulted in a dire shortage of specialists, severely impacting the health sector from major facilities like the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo to rural hospitals, where patients now have to travel extensive distances for specialist consultation and surgical procedures.
