A social security fund that secures life of every citizen – Prime Minister
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says the objective of the National People’s Power Government is to improve the daily life of every citizen of this country in all aspects, be it psychological, social, or economic. With that goal in mind, a comprehensive social security program will be created in which every citizen will be entitled to a pension and where all citizens will be part of it.
She stated this while issuing a message on the National Retirement Day on October 8.

“National Retirement Day” Message of the Honorable Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, Local Government and Labor of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya
Today is Honorable Retired Senior Citizens’ Day, which commemorates the contributions made by those who became part of the country’s life force and dedicated to the advancement of the motherland. ‘National Retirement Day is just a symbolic tribute to their decades of service. Empowering their daily lives economically and socially is the highest tribute that can be given as a developed nation.
Our aim is to build a rich country and a beautiful life for you to live as a healthy, academically perfect, advanced cultural citizen and a retired senior citizen who is not only an economically and socially strong citizen but also sustainably and continuously maintaining national pension benefits in the new government’s policies with a vision of a secured society and a prosperous nation.
With the policies of the new government, whose vision is a secured society and an enriched nation, the national pensions policy will be maintained resolutely and continuously so that a comprehensive policy of providing pensions to all with contributions from formal and informal sectors will be developed and implemented within the existing institutional framework in the future.
So far, the total number of active retirees who have completed their mission has exceeded 720,000. In 2024, the government allocated more than 434 billion rupees to pay their pensions.
It is our aim to improve the daily life of every citizen of this country in all aspects of education, society, and the economy. With that goal in mind, you will no doubt be a part of creating a comprehensive social security program where every citizen is entitled to a pension.
It is our wish to see you contribute to social progress as an active citizen by passing on years of experience, practice, and lifelong good attitudes in public service to the country’s next generation.
