Sri Lanka Launches National Initiative for Autism Daycare Network
Sri Lanka is set to roll out a national network of daycare and therapy centres for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, following a directive from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The programme, which will be coordinated by the Presidential Secretariat, aims to establish a dedicated system of care that integrates health, education, and social services to support affected children and their families. A concept proposal is to be submitted within two weeks, as instructed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, during a high-level planning session held at the Presidential Secretariat.
A budget allocation of Rs. 250 million has been set aside for the project under the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, to be disbursed through district administrations. The initiative will focus on building specialised human resources, developing a scientifically validated care model, and implementing clear operational guidelines.
Officials stressed the importance of a multi-sectoral approach, bringing together medical professionals, educators, and social workers. Key attendees at the meeting included senior officials from multiple ministries, as well as health experts such as Dr. Varuni Rasadi, Dr. Asiri Hewamalage, and Dr. Santhushitha Senadhipathi.
