President Anura Kumara Dissanayake underscored the importance of preserving Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural roots, stating that no country can achieve lasting progress without honouring its past.

He made these remarks during a ceremonial visit to the sacred city of Ruhunu Kataragama yesterday (10), where he participated in religious rituals and later attended the grand Randoli Maha Perahera of the annual Esala Festival.

Addressing the gathering, the President emphasised that every successful nation in the world has grown by safeguarding its heritage. “Our development path must be guided by the values and wisdom of our ancestors,” he said, highlighting the role of Buddhism in shaping Sri Lanka’s identity as a civilised society.

He noted that the Kataragama Perahera, now held for an unbroken span of 2,186 years, is a powerful symbol of cultural continuity and national unity, reminding citizens of the deep spiritual and social bonds that have endured through centuries.

Earlier in the day, President Dissanayake paid homage at the historic Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya and met with the Chief Incumbent, Venerable Kobawaka Dhamminda Nayaka Thera. He also extended his gratitude to all those who helped make this year’s procession a success.

Several dignitaries, including Deputy Minister R.M. Jayawardena, Uva Province Governor Kapila Jayasekara, MP Ruwan Wijeweera, and local officials, were present for the occasion.
