Shani Abeysekara Named Witness in Ekneligoda Abduction Case
The Attorney General’s Department has officially named former CID Director Shani Abeysekara as a key witness in the high-profile case surrounding the alleged abduction and murder of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.
The case, which is being heard before a Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar, involves seven military intelligence personnel, including two Army Lieutenant Colonels. They are accused of conspiring with an unidentified group to kidnap and unlawfully detain Ekneligoda across several locations between January 24 and 27, 2010, before ultimately killing him.
Prosecutors allege the suspects acted as part of an unlawful assembly and have also been charged with aiding and abetting in the execution of these crimes.
Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera, representing the prosecution, informed the court yesterday (July 16) that Abeysekara has been listed as the 109th witness in the trial. The request to summon him as a witness was first made in November 2022.
During yesterday’s proceedings, the court recorded statements from several individuals, including drama director Wasantha Kumara, former LTTE member Siva Kumara, and retired army soldier Sampath Kumara Weeratunga.
Further hearings are scheduled to continue on Friday at 10.30 a.m.
