Former President – Maithripala Sirisena is set to vacate his official residence located on Hector Kobbekaduwa Mawatha, Colombo 07, within the next 02 days, reports say.

Sirisena, who served as Sri Lanka’s 06th Executive President from January 2015 to November 2019, initially occupied the official residence at Mahagamasekara Mawatha, Colombo, but was later ordered by court to vacate that property.

He was granted the current residence afterwards.

Meanwhile, former President – Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has requested a period of 02 months to vacate her residence, and it is said that the government is unlikely to oppose the request.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has already vacated his official residence on Sep. 11, just a day after the President’s Entitlements (Repeal) Bill was passed in Parliament on Sep. 10.

The Bill abolishes special benefits granted to former Presidents, their widows, and retired MPs.

However, their pensions remain intact, while their security remains unaffected as it is provided under a Cabinet decision.

Earlier this year,  during a TV interview, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had expressed his gratitude to former Presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe for relinquishing the housing privilege. He had also added that former first lady Hema Premadasa had also handed over  her official residence as well.
