The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has officially banned the import, possession, and sale of four ornamental fish species that are deemed harmful to the local ecosystem.
A gazette notification has been issued in this regard.
The banned species include Knifefish, Redline Snakehead, Alligator Gar and Piranha.
According to the new rules, the following actions with regard to these fish will be prohibited.
- Import or export
- Possession
- Breeding
- Transport
- Selling or displaying for sale
- Releasing into any aquatic source
These fish, who feed on smaller fish, amphibians, and even birds, deemed as highly invasive species.
