The election of office-bearers for Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) is scheduled to be held today (Oct. 08) at 3.00 pm at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The election follows resolvement of certain legal obstacles as of yesterday.

A Fundamental Rights petition filed before the SC by a party not nominated for the election, claiming a violation of their human rights, was dismissed yesterday (Oct. 07).

Meanwhile, a group of petitioners had previously filed a case before the Court of Appeal challenging the legality of decisions taken by the Working Task Force of Sri Lanka Rugby to amend the Rugby Constitution. However, the CoA had dismissed the petition, which was challenged at the Supreme Court.

However, the SC upheld the CoA ruling, allowing SLR to proceed with appointing the new board of officials.

The Court of Appeal publicly announced the SC’s decision yesterday.

As a result, the long-delayed Annual General Meeting (AGM) of SLR and the election will take place today, averting a potential ban on rugby in the country.

Former President Lasitha Gunarathne and Pavithra Fernando are reported to be the 02 main contenders for the presidency.

Except for the positions of President and Treasurer, all other officers are expected to be appointed unopposed.
