US Politician Chandler Langevin Faces Backlash for ‘Deport Every Indian Immediately’ Remarks

Chandler Langevin, a conservative politician serving on Florida's Palm Bay City Council, is facing widespread criticism after making inflammatory comments targeting Indian Americans. His statements, shared widely on social media, prompted strong reactions from residents, advocacy groups, and fellow lawmakers, ultimately leading to formal action by the city council.

Palm Bay City Council member Chandler Langevin received criticism and censure for inflammatory social media posts targeting Indian Americans, leading to a 3-2 censure vote and a request for his suspension due to calls for deportation and derogatory remarks. Langevin defended his views on immigration and framed the issue as a First Amendment concern.

Calls for Mass Deportations Spark Outrage

Langevin triggered outrage with posts advocating for the deportation of Indians in the US. He claimed that Indians come to America to "drain our pockets" and then either return to India or, "worse... to stay." His comments drew condemnation from Indian American organizations, members of Congress, and local residents alike.

Following the controversy, the Palm Bay City Council voted 3-2 to censure Langevin after public meetings were flooded with citizens denouncing his remarks and demanding his resignation.

Derogatory Social Media Posts Continue

Since mid-September, Langevin has shared at least five offensive posts, including one accusing Indians of "destroying the South." He also reposted a Department of Homeland Security story about an Indian truck driver involved in a fatal accident, adding the comment, "Deport every Indian immediately."

In another post, he accused Indians of "taking advantage of America" in the context of the truck driver incident. Reacting to these comments, Palm Bay Mayor Medina stated that "words that demean or devalue others have no place in the Palm Bay we aspire to be."

Community Backlash and Council Action

Despite mounting criticism, Langevin continued his posts. On October 2, he tweeted: "Today is my birthday and all I want is for @realDonaldTrump to revoke every Indian visa and deport them immediately. America for Americans." That evening, more than 100 residents from Palm Bay and nearby cities attended a council meeting. Members voted 4-1 to send a letter to the governor requesting Langevin's suspension. Many attendees defended the Indian community and criticized Langevin's statements.

Afterward, Langevin claimed he had met some members of the community and issued an apology "STRICTLY to Patriotic Hindu Americans while reaffirming all of my views on immigration policy and Christianity."

Censure and Free Speech Debate

During the council meetings, officials urged formal action against Langevin. Deputy Mayor Mike Jaffe told him, "I am so tired of talking about this and hearing about this. Change your course, man."

Langevin, however, described the censure and calls for his removal as "reprehensible," framing the issue as a First Amendment concern. "This is a plain and simple case of 1st Amendment retaliation and sets a dangerous precedent that any majority can silence any minority within a representative form of government for disagreeing with their policy," he argued.
