One person has been confirmed dead and four others hospitalised following a landslide near the Ganetenna Junction in Kadugannawa along the Colombo–Kandy main road, authorities said.
Hospital sources stated that four individuals who were trapped under the debris were rescued and admitted to the Mawanella Hospital. Several others are still believed to be trapped, and rescue efforts are continuing.
The landslide struck a roadside shop popular among motorists, with earth and rocks collapsing onto the structure and several nearby vehicles.
According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), search and rescue teams are working to free those still buried under the rubble. Police said three of the rescued victims had been pulled out earlier and rushed to the Mawanella Base Hospital.
The incident has resulted in traffic restrictions, with movement along the affected stretch of the Colombo–Kandy road limited to a single lane before being completely halted for safety.
Authorities have warned that persistent heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of further landslides, rockfalls, and earth slips in the Pahala Kadugannawa area. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes, as the road section near Ganetenna remains temporarily closed.
