Badulla District Secretary Panduka Sri Prabath Abeywardena states that, due to the prevailing heavy rainfall and the resulting landslide risk, 301 individuals from 111 families in the Passara and Haputale Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat areas were evacuated from their homes and directed to safe locations this afternoon (26).

According to him, 197 individuals from 69 families in the Kanaverella Estate in Passara were evacuated and sheltered at the Kanaverella Day-Care Centre and the Kanaverella Tamil School No. 3.
Meanwhile, 72 individuals from 32 families in the Bathgoda area of Haldummulla, 21 individuals from 8 families in the Gal Kanda–Muthuwana section of Diyatalawa, and 11 individuals from 2 families residing near the Haputale Kovil have also been moved out of their homes.

The District Secretary added that most evacuees are temporarily staying with relatives. He further stated that cooked food and necessary sanitary facilities are being provided to them.

Clearing Work Begins on Landslide Blocking Colombo–Badulla Road in Haputale

Meanwhile, it has been reported that work has commenced on clearing the Colombo–Badulla main road, which was completely blocked by a landslide. Excavators are being used to remove soil, rocks and fallen trees to clear the route.

The landslide occurred this afternoon near the Haputale town area, completely obstructing the Colombo–Badulla main road.

Haputale Police confirmed that excavation machinery is currently being used to remove soil, rocks and tree debris and that road-clearing operations are underway.
