
A discussion on the procurement of essential food items at agreed prices was held yesterday (Nov. 25) at the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, under the patronage of Minister – Wasantha Samarasinghe.
The meeting involved the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) of India as well as Sri Lanka’s Co-operative Wholesale Establishment (CWE).
Officials focused on how essential food items, selected to meet local consumer demand, could be imported by CWE at agreed prices.
The discussion also explored the possibility of distributing these items to Sri Lankan consumers through the Lanka Sathosa network at reasonable prices.
The meeting was attended by the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation, India – Pankaj Kumar Bansal, Managing Director of NAFED – Anand Mohan, Shamitha Manohar, Jitendra Pareek, Secretary – K.A. Vimalenthirarajah, Advisor – Dr. Shanta Jayarathna, CWE Chairman – Kosala Wilbawa, and CWE CEO – Asanka Fernando.
