Mass Shooting In South Africa

In Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, at least ten people died and numerous others were injured in a mass shooting on Sunday when gunmen attacked a tavern and nearby streets, prompting increased security and an ongoing police investigation.

Gunmen Open Fire at Tavern and Nearby Streets

According to reports by SABC News, armed assailants stormed a local tavern in Bekkersdal and opened fire on people gathered inside. Witnesses said the shooting happened without warning, triggering panic as people tried to escape.

Authorities later confirmed that some victims were also shot outside the tavern, indicating that the attack extended beyond a single location.

The gunmen fled the scene before police teams could reach the area. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where several victims were reported to be in critical condition.

Security forces cordoned off parts of the township as investigators began collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses.

Police Probe Underway, Motive Unclear

The South African Police said the shooting occurred in Bekkersdal, around 40 kilometres from Johannesburg. Officials added that the motive behind the attack remains unknown and no arrests have been made so far.

"Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen," the police said in a statement.
