A live concert by renowned Bangladeshi musician Faruq Mahfuz Anam James was called off in Faridpur on Friday after violence broke out at the venue.

The programme, organised to mark the anniversary of a local school, descended into chaos when a mob stormed the area, leaving more than 25 people injured and raising fresh concerns about the safety of artists and cultural events in Bangladesh.
The show was scheduled to begin around 9 pm, but the situation escalated before the performance could start. According to local reports, a group attempted to force entry into the venue and began hurling bricks, stones, and chairs, triggering panic among those present.
What happened at the Faridpur concert venue
Eyewitness accounts suggest the disruption began as crowds gathered ahead of the performance. The attackers allegedly targeted the seating area, leading to injuries among attendees and staff. With tensions spiralling and security unable to regain control, organisers cancelled the concert to prevent further harm.
The incident has added to an ongoing debate in Bangladesh over repeated attacks on concerts, artists, and cultural spaces, with musicians and organisers increasingly voicing fears over public safety at live events.
Who is Faruq Mahfuz Anam James?
Faruq Mahfuz Anam James, popularly known as James, is one of the most influential figures in Bangladeshi rock music. Born in 1964, he grew up in Chittagong, where his father served as Chairman of the Chittagong Education Board. Over the years, James has earned the nickname 'Guru' for his lasting impact on generations of musicians and listeners.
He is the frontman of the rock band Nagar Baul, earlier known as Feelings. During the 1990s, James and his band emerged as part of what fans describe as the 'big three' of Bangla rock, alongside LRB and Ark, helping shape the country's hard rock and psychedelic rock sound.
Rise of a Bangla rock icon
James released his first album, Station Road, with Nagar Baul in 1987. A year later, he stepped out as a solo artist with Annonna, further cementing his place in the music scene. His powerful vocals and distinctive style quickly set him apart, making him a household name in Bangladesh.
Beyond band and solo work, James collaborated with several noted lyricists over the years, including Shamsur Rahman, Lucky Akhand, Prince Mahmud, Marjuk Rasel, Shibli, and Deholovi, expanding the emotional and poetic range of his music.
From Bangla rock to Bollywood playback
James also found recognition in Indian cinema, lending his voice to popular Bollywood tracks. He sang 'Bheegi Bheegi' in the film Gangster and 'Chal Chalein' in Woh Lamhe. His playback work continued with songs such as 'Rishtey' and 'Alvida (Reprise)' in Life in a... Metro, followed by 'Bebasi' in Warning 3D.
In addition to music, James appeared in television commercials during the early 2000s, including campaigns for Pepsi in Bangladesh and West Bengal, and later for the energy drink Black Horse in 2011.
As investigations continue into the Faridpur violence, the attack on James's concert has once again spotlighted the challenges faced by artists performing live, even as his legacy as a pioneer of Bangla rock remains firmly intact.
