AI-Assisted Robotic Surgery Sparks New Healthcare Transformation Debate Nationwide
Sri Lanka’s first successful artificial intelligence-assisted robotic surgeries have positioned the country alongside a growing number of nations embracing advanced surgical technology. While medical professionals describe the achievement as a significant leap forward, the introduction of robotic surgery has also prompted wider discussion about its long-term impact on healthcare delivery, affordability and future medical practice.
The pioneering operations were conducted by specialist surgeons at Asiri Surgical Hospital in Colombo using an advanced robotic surgical system. One patient underwent a hysterectomy involving the removal of the uterus, while the second underwent a highly complex kidney procedure.
Hospital officials have been quick to clarify a common misconception surrounding artificial intelligence in medicine. Although the system incorporates AI-supported programming and sophisticated software, it does not make independent decisions or perform operations without human oversight. Every stage of the surgery is directed by the operating surgeon through a specialised console that controls robotic arms designed to replicate hand movements with exceptional precision.
According to medical experts, the robotic platform enhances surgical performance by allowing finer movements, greater flexibility and improved visualization during procedures. Artificial intelligence and advanced programming help optimise instrument control and movement accuracy, enabling surgeons to perform delicate operations that may be more challenging through conventional techniques.
Chief Operating Officer of Asiri Surgical Hospital, Dr. Samanthi de Silva, said patients undergoing robotic-assisted surgery can benefit from smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, fewer infections, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times. She added that the precision of the technology may also help reduce the likelihood of surgical errors in complex procedures.
However, healthcare analysts point out that the technology represents a substantial financial investment. Robotic surgical systems cost millions of dollars globally, while ongoing expenses include maintenance, specialised equipment and extensive training for surgeons and operating theatre staff. These factors could limit widespread adoption unless significant investment is made across both private and public healthcare sectors.
Medical professionals also stress that robotic surgery is not appropriate for every patient or every operation. Clinical assessment remains the deciding factor in determining whether robotic assistance offers meaningful advantages over traditional open or laparoscopic surgery. As with any surgical procedure, outcomes continue to depend largely on the experience and skill of the operating team.
The successful completion of Sri Lanka’s first robotic-assisted surgeries nevertheless represents a landmark moment for the country’s healthcare sector. As hospitals increasingly explore advanced medical technologies, policymakers and health authorities may face growing pressure to establish national standards governing robotic surgery, surgeon certification and patient safety.
The coming years are likely to determine whether robotic-assisted surgery becomes a routine feature of Sri Lankan healthcare or remains a specialised service available primarily within the private medical sector.
