July 27, Colombo (LNW): The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to raise the retirement age of judges across various levels in Sri Lanka, including the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, by two years.
Under the new proposal, the mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court judges will be increased to 67, while the retirement age for Court of Appeal judges will be extended to 65.
Constitutional amendments will also be introduced to extend the service tenure for judges serving in High Courts, District Courts, and Magistrate Courts.
Instructions have already been issued to the Legal Draftsman to prepare the necessary draft legislation.
This judicial reform aims to allow senior judges to serve longer, ensuring the retention of experienced judicial expertise within the country’s court system.
The draft bill will proceed to the Attorney General’s clearance before being submitted for parliamentary procedures to complete the process.
