‘A Nation United’ Anti-Drug Drive Nets Billions Worth of Narcotics in Nine Months
August 01, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lankan police have seized a massive quantity of illegal narcotics valued at more than Rs. 102 billion during the first nine months of the nationwide ‘A Nation United’ anti-drug operation, underscoring the scale of the country’s ongoing campaign against organised drug trafficking.
According to Police, the operation has resulted in the recovery of 2,253.834 kilogrammes of heroin, with an estimated street value of Rs. 49.584 billion.
Investigators also confiscated 2,640.695 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) during the same period. Authorities estimate the seized stock to be worth approximately Rs. 42.251 billion, making it one of the largest categories of narcotics intercepted under the operation.
In addition, Police recovered 293.732 kilogrammes of cocaine, valued at around Rs. 10.221 billion, further highlighting the broad range of illicit drugs targeted through the nationwide enforcement campaign.
Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said the operation has also led to the seizure of 3.6 million narcotic pills, dealing a significant blow to the illegal distribution network.
Authorities expressed particular concern over the number of young people becoming involved in drug-related offences. During the nine-month period, 743 children and 7,866 young people were arrested for allegedly possessing narcotic pills, reflecting what Police described as a worrying trend in youth involvement with illegal substances.
