PickMe Builds Integrated Platform to Unlock Rs. 30 Billion Colombo Tourism Potential
Mobility PickMe’s launch of Colombo Connect has generated considerable interest within Sri Lanka’s tourism and technology sectors, not only because of its digital innovation but also due to the company’s ambitious projection that the platform could generate more than Rs. 30 billion annually in economic activity once fully developed. While the estimate signals confidence in the project’s potential, its success will ultimately depend on widespread industry participation and sustained visitor engagement.
Introduced under the newly branded PickMe Explore platform, Colombo Connect seeks to digitally integrate attractions, entertainment venues, restaurants, retailers, transport providers and cultural institutions into a single ecosystem. Rather than functioning solely as a ticketing service, the platform aims to become a comprehensive city guide where users can discover experiences, purchase admission, arrange transport and access exclusive offers through one application.
According to PickMe Chief Executive Officer Jiffry Zulfer, modern travellers increasingly plan their journeys through smartphones, making digital discoverability a critical factor in destination competitiveness. The company’s strategy is based on encouraging visitors to move beyond a single attraction by recommending additional experiences nearby, thereby increasing visitor spending across multiple sectors.
The first partner to join the initiative is Colombo Lotus Tower, where visitors can purchase QR-enabled admission tickets through PickMe Explore for attractions including the Observation Deck and Pixel Bloom, South Asia’s first immersive digital art museum. PickMe expects museums, event organisers, nightlife operators, retailers and other tourism businesses to join the platform during future phases.
The economic rationale behind the initiative is straightforward. Tourism experts have long observed that many international visitors arriving in Colombo spend only a few hours in the city before travelling to beach destinations, wildlife parks or the central highlands. This trend limits spending in Colombo despite significant investments in hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and entertainment facilities.
If Colombo Connect succeeds in encouraging visitors to extend their stay by even one additional day, businesses across hospitality, transport, food and beverage, retail and cultural sectors could experience measurable gains. Increased visitor circulation would also benefit small and medium-sized enterprises that often struggle to attract international tourists through traditional marketing channels.
Nevertheless, achieving the projected Rs. 30 billion annual economic impact will require more than technological capability. The platform’s effectiveness depends on attracting a critical mass of participating businesses while ensuring accurate listings, seamless digital payments, reliable transport connections and consistently positive customer experiences.
Competition also remains a factor. International travel platforms already provide booking, navigation and attraction discovery services, meaning PickMe must demonstrate clear local advantages through integrated mobility, exclusive promotions and stronger partnerships with domestic businesses.
Beyond commercial considerations, Colombo Connect could contribute to a broader transformation in how Sri Lanka markets urban tourism. Historically, the country has promoted beaches, wildlife and heritage attractions, while Colombo has often served merely as a transit point. By packaging the capital as an interconnected destination offering culture, entertainment, dining and shopping alongside efficient transport, the initiative may help reposition Colombo as a destination worthy of exploration rather than simply a gateway to other regions.Whether the ambitious economic projections materialise remains uncertain, but Colombo Connect represents one of the most comprehensive attempts by a Sri Lankan technology company to combine mobility, tourism and digital commerce into a single ecosystem. If successfully implemented and widely adopted, it could redefine not only how visitors experience Colombo but also how digital platforms contribute to the future growth of Sri Lanka’s tourism economy
