The 22nd Constitution, proposing to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges, is scheduled to be presented to Parliament on August 18.

Under the proposed changes, the retirement age of Supreme Court judges would increase from 65 to 67, while the retirement age of Court of Appeal judges would increase from 63 to 65.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara confirmed that the Bill will be presented to Parliament on August 18.

The proposal has faced opposition from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), the Judicial Service Association, opposition political parties and several civil society groups.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking to BASL representatives, said the move was not aimed at any individual or group but was part of a broader systemic reform of the justice and investigative sectors.

He also highlighted ongoing measures to strengthen the police, Attorney General’s Department and anti-corruption institutions, reduce court backlogs and expand the digitalisation of the judiciary.
