August 30, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is keeping watch on a group of 20 Iranian fuel tankers reported to be positioned near the country’s maritime boundary, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The vessels are currently anchored outside Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the ministry said, clarifying that their presence does not place any responsibility on the Sri Lankan authorities.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo said Sri Lanka has no legal obligation or direct responsibility for the tankers, while confirming that officials are continuing to monitor developments in the area.
The clarification follows reports that the vessels had gathered in waters in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, prompting attention over their status and proximity to the country’s maritime jurisdiction.
