August 30, Colombo (LNW): Consumers are paying more for a range of popular flour-based snacks and breakfast items after leading flour suppliers raised their prices, according to the All-Island Canteen Owners’ Association.
Association Chairman Harshana Rukshan said the cost of several commonly sold short eats had been increased by Rs. 5. The adjustment covers items such as parata, egg roti, vegetable roti, rolls and patties.
Other staple items have also seen smaller increases. A string hopper now costs an additional Rs. 1, while the price of a hopper has risen by Rs. 2.
The latest changes come after major flour producers Prima Ceylon and Serendib Flour Mills increased the wholesale price of wheat flour by Rs. 17 per kilogram.
The higher raw-material costs could also have wider implications for the bakery sector. The All-Island Bakery Owners’ Association is due to consider whether bread and other baked goods will need to be repriced.
Association President N.K. Jayawardena said the organisation’s central committee will review the situation before announcing its position.
Flour industry representatives have pointed to a combination of international cost pressures behind the latest increase. These include more expensive shipping and maritime insurance, as well as higher global grain prices amid continued instability in the Middle East.
