August 30, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is preparing to send disaster relief personnel to Nepal in the coming days as part of an emergency response to communities affected by severe flooding, Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara has said.
The proposed deployment will involve members of Sri Lanka’s security forces, who are expected to assist local authorities and humanitarian agencies with relief and recovery efforts in the worst-affected areas.
Speaking to journalists in Anuradhapura, Jayasekara said the government was also preparing a financial contribution of US$1 million to support Nepal’s flood-relief operations.
He said officials from the Defence Ministry and the National Disaster Management Relief Centre were working to determine the most urgent requirements on the ground before finalising the assistance package. The assessment will help establish what specialist personnel and resources should be sent from Sri Lanka.
The exact number of personnel involved, as well as the nature of the teams to be deployed, has yet to be decided. Officials are expected to finalise the arrangements over the next few days.
Jayasekara said Sri Lanka was closely following the situation in Nepal and was keen to provide practical assistance at a time when the country was dealing with the aftermath of widespread flooding.
He added that Sri Lanka’s response reflected its commitment to extending humanitarian support to fellow South Asian nations during times of crisis.
