September 01, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is set to extend US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal after severe flash floods caused widespread devastation in the northern Raghuwa District on August 26.
The disaster has reportedly resulted in loss of life and extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure and other property, leaving Nepal facing significant humanitarian and recovery challenges.
The assistance comes as rescue teams continue efforts to locate people who remain missing, while authorities remain alert to the possibility of further flooding. Damage to vital infrastructure has also increased the urgency of relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the financial contribution following a proposal put forward by the President. The decision reflects the longstanding relationship between Sri Lanka and Nepal, strengthened over the years through shared cultural and religious traditions as well as close ties between their peoples.
Sri Lanka’s own experience in dealing with the human and economic impact of major natural disasters was also considered when the assistance was approved.
According to the Department of Government Information, the contribution is intended to support Nepal’s immediate humanitarian needs and assist the country as it begins the difficult process of recovery from the disaster.
