September 11, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has recorded 97,027 dengue cases so far this year, highlighting the continued public health challenge posed by the mosquito-borne disease across the island.
Figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit show that 1,536 infections were reported during the first part of September alone. The country has also recorded 74 deaths linked to dengue since the beginning of the year.
The Western Province remains the worst-affected area, accounting for 51,180 cases. The Southern Province has reported 14,036 infections, followed by the Central Province with 8,958 and Sabaragamuwa with 7,998.
At district level, Gampaha has registered the highest number of cases, with 20,622 infections. Colombo follows with 19,168 cases, while Kandy has recorded 7,199. Matara and Kalutara have reported 6,186 and 6,218 cases respectively.
Health authorities continue to closely monitor the situation, with 40 Medical Officer of Health areas across the country currently classified as high-risk zones.
With the annual total now approaching the 100,000 mark, health officials are expected to maintain surveillance and prevention efforts, particularly in areas where dengue transmission remains elevated.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant about eliminating stagnant water and other potential mosquito breeding sites.
