October 10, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has strongly condemned attacks against civilian airports in Saudi Arabia that have reportedly killed three people and left several others injured, expressing solidarity with the Saudi Government and its people amid escalating regional hostilities.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism conveyed its condolences to the families of those killed and extended its wishes for the swift recovery of those wounded in the attacks.

Colombo also called on all parties involved in the escalating conflict to exercise the utmost restraint and pursue constructive dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the security situation. The Government stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement in reducing tensions and avoiding additional civilian casualties.

The condemnation follows a deadly attack on Riyadh airport on Thursday, with Saudi authorities confirming the deaths on Friday. The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of civilian aviation as hostilities linked to the wider US-Iran conflict continue to spread across the region.

Yemen’s Houthi movement has intensified its missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, with the group reportedly seeking to disrupt operations and restrict access to the kingdom’s airspace. The developments have raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of critical transport infrastructure as regional tensions deepen.

The strikes reportedly injured several people and damaged an aircraft operated by Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s national carrier. Images and reports from the scene indicated that smoke rose above the airport following the incident, underscoring the potential risks posed to civilian facilities by the continuing hostilities.

The attacks have also disrupted air travel, prompting several airlines to cancel services to Riyadh as aviation operators reassess security risks and operational conditions. The disruption comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Saudi capital, which is preparing to host a major gathering of international oil industry leaders.

The Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the attack on Thursday, stating that it had launched two ballistic missiles towards the airport. The incident represents a further escalation in a conflict whose effects are increasingly being felt beyond the immediate areas of military confrontation.

The targeting of civilian aviation infrastructure has raised wider concerns about the potential consequences for international travel, regional commerce and the safety of passengers and airport personnel. Disruptions to major aviation hubs can also have knock-on effects on connecting flights and international business activity.

Sri Lanka’s response reflects its concern over the widening regional crisis and the humanitarian consequences of attacks affecting civilian populations. The Government’s appeal for restraint and dialogue highlights the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further loss of life and restore stability.

As tensions continue to rise, the safety of civilians and the protection of essential transport infrastructure remain pressing concerns, with further escalation posing risks to regional security and international aviation.
