A New Year party at a bar in Switzerland's Alps ended in tragedy after an explosion and fire ripped through the venue in the early hours of Thursday.

An explosion and fire at a bar in the Swiss Alps, Le Constellation, in Crans-Montana during New Year's celebrations killed at least 10 people and injured 10 others, with authorities investigating the cause, which could be related to pyrotechnics.
At least 10 people were killed and several others injured in the incident at a popular ski resort, with authorities warning that the toll could rise as investigations continue.
The incident occurred in the Alpine resort town of Crans-Montana, where revellers had gathered to ring in the New Year.
Fire Erupted While Over 100 People Were Inside
Police said the fire broke out around 1:30 am during celebrations at a bar called Le Constellation. According to police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion, more than a hundred people were inside the building when the blaze began.
Emergency services rushed to the scene as flames spread through the venue. "We are seeing many injured and many dead," police said, as rescue efforts continued through the night. Swiss media reported that nearby hospitals started receiving several patients with serious burn injuries.
Confirmed Deaths and Fears of a Higher Toll
Authorities have confirmed that at least 10 people lost their lives in the incident, while 10 others were injured. However, doctors treating the victims warned that the number of fatalities could increase.
Medical professionals quoted by Swiss daily Blick said the death toll could reach the "dozens". Regional newspaper Le Nouvelliste also cited sources describing the situation as involving "a heavy toll". The bar is located in a globally known ski destination that attracts large numbers of tourists, adding to concerns about the scale of the tragedy.
What May Have Caused the Explosion
Police initially described the incident as an "explosion of unknown origin". Investigators said the inquiry is at an early stage and no final conclusions have been drawn.
However, Swiss media reports suggested that the fire may have been triggered by pyrotechnics used during a concert at the bar. Authorities have said all possible causes are being examined as forensic teams inspect the site.
Security Measures and Official Clarifications
Following the explosion, police sealed off the area completely and imposed a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana, according to AFP. Officials said the restrictions were necessary to allow emergency operations and the ongoing investigation.
Police have also confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terror-related. The focus remains on establishing how the explosion occurred and assessing whether safety protocols were breached.
