September 27, Colombo (LNW): Dengue infections are continuing to climb across Sri Lanka as persistent rainfall creates favourable conditions for mosquito breeding, health authorities have warned.
The National Dengue Control Unit reported 1,276 new cases during the current week, up from 1,156 recorded in the previous week.
Consultant Community Physician Dr Prasheela Samaraweera said the country has recorded 99,634 dengue infections so far this year, while 77 deaths have been attributed to the disease.
Gampaha District remains the area with the largest reported caseload, accounting for 21,136 infections.
Health officials are urging residents to take extra precautions during the wet weather by removing stagnant water and keeping homes, gardens and other surrounding areas free of potential mosquito breeding sites.
Dr Samaraweera stressed that maintaining clean surroundings is particularly important while the rainy conditions continue, as even small collections of standing water can provide breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
