Controversial Video Removed After Backlash

The video was posted late Thursday night and quickly triggered outrage online and in political circles.

Although the White House initially defended the content, it was removed shortly before noon on Friday following mounting criticism.

According to a White House official, the post was uploaded in error by a staff member and was subsequently deleted.

The nearly minute-long video primarily focused on disputed claims surrounding the 2020 presidential election. Toward the end, however, it showed the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama superimposed onto cartoon apes while the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" played in the background.

The imagery drew strong reactions, with critics saying it echoed racist tropes historically used against Black people.

The controversy unfolded during Black History Month, a time dedicated to recognising the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Barack Obama holds historical significance as the first Black president of the United States.

White House Response And Political Reactions

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to media queries by stating that the video was part of a broader internet meme portraying Donald Trump as a lion and Democrats as characters from "The Lion King." She dismissed the criticism as exaggerated and urged focus on other issues.

Despite the explanation, the post drew criticism across party lines. Several Republican lawmakers publicly urged Trump to remove the video and apologise.

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott described it as deeply offensive and called for its deletion. Other Republican leaders, including Senator Pete Ricketts and Representative Mike Lawler, also said the post was inappropriate and should be taken down.

Democratic leaders reacted strongly as well. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the post and called it offensive and harmful, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticised the president and questioned the response from Republican leadership.

Previous Use Of Edited Content On Social Media

The incident also renewed attention on Trump's past use of edited or AI-generated videos targeting political opponents.

In previous instances, he had shared manipulated content depicting political figures in altered or satirical forms, which had similarly drawn criticism.

Representatives for Barack and Michelle Obama had not issued an immediate response at the time. The episode has once again sparked debate over political messaging, social media conduct and the limits of satire in public discourse.
