Sri Lanka’s National Science Day celebrations and the launch of National Science Week were held yesterday (Nov. 10) at the Waters Edge Hotel in Battaramulla, coinciding with the World Science Day for Peace and Development.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology under the patronage of Minister – Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena.

This year’s theme, “Building Trust, Driving Transformation: Science for Sri Lanka’s Future,” highlights the growing role of science in daily life and policy-making, reflecting national efforts to integrate research, innovation, and education with strategic priorities.

Following the official inauguration of the National Science Week, the first program featured 02 expert panel discussions on scientific approaches to policy-making and enhancing diplomatic ties in science and technology, with participation from leading professionals in the field.

Speaking at the event, Minister Abeysena emphasized the ministry’s commitment to fostering a society grounded in science, technology, and innovation, ensuring that the benefits of research and development reach both the economy and the people.

He also noted that a significant portion of the 2026 budget has been allocated to initiatives, including technology incubation centers to advance the sector.

The event was attended by senior officials of the Ministry, including Secretary – Mohamed Navavi, heads of affiliated institutions, university representatives, scientists and tech experts.
