Engineers leaving the country have tripled
The number of engineers leaving the country has increased three times this year when compared with previous years, says Chartered Engineer Damith Dissanayake, former Assistant Secretary of the Public Service Engineers Association,
He says that in the past two years, about 5,000 engineers have left the country, and 40% of the professionals who have left the country are engineers.
He says there are many vacancies in the engineering field in Sri Lanka, but the need for experienced people in this field is serious. Since the salary given to the professionals engaged in the field of engineering in this country is very low, many of them have decided to go abroad to achieve a higher standard of living, said Chartered Engineer Damith Dissanayake.
He further pointed out that if the government does not take positive steps regarding salary increases now, the rest of the engineers engaged in the field will not be prevented from leaving the country.
