Free Solar Panels to All Religious Places from Ministry of Energy
The Ministry of Energy has started a project to install free solar panels on the roofs of religious shrines across the island.
Accordingly, with the financial support of 17 million dollars from the Government of India, the Electricity Board and the Sri Lanka Sunithya Energy Authority will start the solar power project on the sites of all religious shrines.
The Ministry of Energy states that this project is expected to cover all religious shrines, such as temples, shrines, churches, mosques and Hindu temples scattered all over the island.
Under the first phase, 5,000 religious shrines are expected to be covered by the first half of 2025, and solar panel sets with a capacity of five kilowatts (5 kW) are expected to be installed on the roofs of those religious places.
In this way, the religious shrines’ electricity bills will be reduced, and the electrical units remaining after their consumption will be added to the national electricity grid.
Each of these solar power systems is expected to generate between 500 – 600 units of electricity every month, contributing significantly to the energy needs of the religious shrines and the national grid.
