As the world prepared to welcome the New Year, a wave of security alerts forced authorities in several global capitals to cancel or scale back traditional celebrations.

Following arrests in the United States related to a New Year's Eve plot, several global cities, including Sydney, Paris, Tokyo, and Belgrade, canceled or scaled back celebrations due to security concerns and potential risks linked to large gatherings.
The decisions followed the arrest of multiple suspects in the United States over an alleged plot to target New Year's Eve gatherings, prompting governments to prioritise public safety over large-scale festivities.
Security agencies said four individuals were arrested in the Mojave Desert in connection with an alleged bombing plan aimed at New Year's Eve events. A fifth suspect was detained separately in New Orleans, according to officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The developments triggered urgent reviews of security arrangements worldwide, with several cities opting to pull the plug on major public events.
Heightened global alert after terror arrests
Following the arrests, authorities across continents reassessed the risks linked to mass gatherings. Officials cited credible terror threats, crowd management challenges and recent violent incidents as key reasons behind the cancellations. Law enforcement agencies have also stepped up coordination and intelligence sharing, urging citizens to remain vigilant as the year comes to a close.
Sydney: Fireworks and beach events called off
In Sydney, authorities cancelled the iconic New Year's Eve events at Bondi Beach, including fireworks and large public parties. The decision was influenced by lingering security concerns following the December 14 terror shooting that killed 15 people and injured dozens in the city. Officials said the risk associated with large crowds could not be ignored amid the heightened threat environment.
Paris: Champs-Élysées concert cancelled
Paris police called off the planned New Year's Eve concert on the Champs-Élysées, citing security risks and crowd control challenges. While the large concert was scrapped, authorities indicated that fireworks and light displays could still take place in alternative, more controlled formats across the city.
Tokyo: Shibuya countdown abandoned
Tokyo authorities cancelled the famous countdown at Shibuya Station, a magnet for massive crowds every year. Officials pointed to risks linked to overcrowding and broader public safety concerns as reasons for the decision, asking residents and visitors to avoid congregating at the busy crossing.
Belgrade: Celebrations suspended
Belgrade also joined the list of cities halting festivities. The Serbian capital cancelled its official New Year's Eve and Serbian New Year celebrations, with authorities stressing security and crowd safety concerns amid the global alert.
Officials across countries said the arrests in the United States represented a crucial disruption of a potential terror plot. They underlined that constant vigilance remains essential during globally celebrated events, especially when large crowds are involved, even if that means welcoming the New Year in a quieter way.
