Green Number Plates to Identify EVs Under New Arrangement

September 07, Colombo (LNW): Electric vehicles in Sri Lanka are set to receive a distinct form of registration plate, with the Department of Motor Traffic introducing green-background number plates specifically for this category of vehicles.

Department of Motor Traffic Commissioner General Retired Air Vice Marshal Thushara Fernando has confirmed that the new plates will be legally recognised for use on electric vehicles. Conventional vehicles, meanwhile, will continue to be issued with the existing white and yellow number plates.

The department has also completed the preparation of a substantial batch of number plates awaiting collection. In total, plates have been made available for 88,740 registered vehicles.

Of these, 56,233 relate to vehicles registered between June 10 and August 31, 2026, while another 32,507 plates concern registrations recorded during 2023 and 2024.

Vehicle owners whose plates are ready have been requested to collect them from the Department of Motor Traffic office in Narahenpita. The latest move is expected to make electric vehicles more readily identifiable on the road while maintaining the existing registration system for other vehicle categories.
