Even though the Ranil Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa coalition government has declared that the economy has improved to the point that there are no fuel queues or other such queues in the country, figures have been presented about the reduction in the amount of food the people can afford.
The Annual Report – 2022 of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka reveals the relevant data. In 2021 the consumption of rice per person was 151 kg. However, in 2022 it was 129 kg – down by 22 kg. Also, wheat flour consumption in 2021 was 60 kg, but in 2022, it was 37 kg. – down by 23 kg. The consumption of maize in 2021 was 22 kg but dropped to 20 kg in 2022.
As such, the consumption per person regarding the three ways of preparing the basic food of the people of this country, which was 233 kg in 2021, has dropped to 186 kg in 2022 – a drop of 47 kg.
