July 26, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is likely to experience a further rise in temperatures in the coming weeks as weather experts warn that the developing El Niño pattern continues to gain strength.
Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Ajith Wijewickrama, said current forecasts indicate that the El Niño phenomenon is shifting from a weak phase to a moderate one, a development that could contribute to hotter and drier conditions across many parts of the country during the coming month.
The Department has also issued a heat advisory, warning that the heat index is expected to reach the “caution” category during daytime hours in the Eastern Province as well as the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota and Monaragala.
Health authorities advise that prolonged exposure to high temperatures may lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, older adults and those working outdoors. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to stay well hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear light clothing and seek shade whenever possible.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to remain alert to updated weather advisories, noting that heat conditions could intensify further if the current climatic trend continues over the coming weeks.
