October 18, Colombo (LNW): Environment Minister Dr Dhammika Patabendi has announced plans for an independent inquiry into the death of Kavanthissa, an elephant that had recently undergone medical treatment, amid questions over the circumstances surrounding the animal’s demise.

Speaking to reporters following an event in Kilinochchi, the Minister said the investigation would seek to establish whether shortcomings in the treatment process had contributed to the elephant’s death or whether any deliberate attempt had been made to cause harm.

He acknowledged the efforts of the veterinary team, noting that specialists had done everything within their capacity to save the animal. However, despite their interventions, the treatment proved unsuccessful, prompting the Minister to express his regret over the loss.

Kavanthissa, the largest tusker to have walked on the Sri Lankan soil, was confirmed dead two days ago, sparking public outrage and even calls for the subject minister’s resignation over his failure to save this national treasure.

Dr Patabendi stressed that the inquiry would examine all relevant aspects of the case, including the possibility that the elephant had been harmed without the knowledge of the responsible authorities. He said the findings would be crucial in determining whether the incident resulted from medical errors, negligence or intentional wrongdoing.

The Minister also underscored the need to strengthen veterinary care for sick and injured wildlife, adding that the Environment Ministry would work towards improving the services provided by veterinary professionals and the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

He assured that appropriate and stringent action would follow if the investigation uncovered any misconduct or negligence. Any findings, he indicated, would help identify areas requiring improvement and reinforce safeguards for animals under the care of wildlife authorities.

The inquiry is expected to provide greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding Kavanthissa’s death, while the Minister’s remarks have renewed attention on the standards of wildlife treatment and the accountability of those entrusted with protecting the country’s animals.
