Japan provides emergency relief goods to SL

Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka – Akio Isomata today (Dec. 04) handed over emergency relief goods to Aruna Jayasekara – Deputy Minister of Defence in response to the damages caused by the cyclone “Ditwah”.  

Through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Government of Japan is providing, in total, 200 tents, 1,200 blankets, 1,200 sleeping pads, 20 rolls of plastic sheet (tarpaulin), 200 portable plastic jerry cans and 10 water purifiers.  These relief goods will be distributed to the people affected by the floods and landslides in many parts of the island.

The hand-over ceremony, which was held this morning at Bandaranaike International Airport, was also attended by Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda (Retd.), Director General of Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka and Mr. Kenji KURONUMA, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka Office.

Ambassador Isomata remarked “the provision of these goods is a testament to the strong bond of trust and friendship that exists between Japan and Sri Lanka, and shows an unwavering commitment of Japan to helping the people of Sri Lanka in need. Japan stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka in this time of great difficulty.”

Separately from the assistance of these emergency relief goods, the 31 members of Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Medical Team is now in Sri Lanka to provide emergency medical services in Chilaw, in Puttalam District, to the distressed people in the local community.
