Tech billionaire Elon Musk has long maintained that he did not have a close relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, newly released documents by the Justice Department have offered fresh details about their past communication.

Newly released Justice Department documents reveal at least 16 emails exchanged between Elon Musk and Jeffrey Epstein between 2012 and 2013, including Musk's expressed interest in visiting Epstein's Caribbean island, though the documents don't confirm a visit or accuse Musk of wrongdoing. The documents were released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, and also show discussions about solar energy and possible meetings.
The records, made public on Friday, include at least 16 emails exchanged between Musk and Epstein during 2012 and 2013. Some of these messages show Musk expressing interest in visiting Epstein's private Caribbean island, a place that later became widely known for serious abuse allegations.
What the Emails Show?
In one email from November 2012, Musk asked Epstein which day or night would be the "wildest party" on the island. Other emails suggest that Musk explored the idea of visiting the island more than once, including again in late 2013. This indicates that discussions about a possible visit were ongoing for some time.
The emails do not confirm whether Musk ever went to the island. They also do not accuse him of any illegal activity. Musk did not respond to media requests for comment following the release of the documents.
Musk's Past Statements and Timeline
Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to procuring an underage girl for prostitution and was registered as a sex offender. Despite this, allegations linked to his island gained wider public attention only years later.
In 2019, Musk told Vanity Fair that he viewed Epstein as a "creep" and said he had refused invitations to visit the island. More recently, after House Democrats released Epstein's schedules suggesting a possible Musk visit in December 2014, Musk denied the claim on X, calling the entry false.
Other Topics Discussed in Emails
The released emails also show that Musk and Epstein discussed subjects unrelated to travel, including solar energy and sleep habits. At the time, Musk was chairman of SolarCity, a company later acquired by Tesla. Epstein had asked about using solar power for his island or ranch, an idea Musk appeared hesitant about due to business limitations.
Their assistants were also in touch to arrange possible meetings, including a proposed lunch at SpaceX offices in early 2013, though it remains unclear if that meeting ever happened.
Why the Files Were Released
The documents were made public under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by Donald Trump. The law requires the release of millions of pages related to Epstein, shedding light on his connections with wealthy and influential individuals.
While the emails add context to Musk's past interactions with Epstein, there is no allegation or evidence of wrongdoing against Musk in the released material.
