October 29, Colombo (LNW): The Small Medium Enterprise (SME) sector in Sri Lanka is a crucial component of the national economy, playing a vital role in inclusive economic growth, regional development, job creation, and poverty alleviation.

Recognized by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) as an essential strategic sector, SMEs represent over 75% of the country’s businesses, contribute to 45% of employment, and account for 52% of the GDP. By facilitating regional transformation, SMEs encourage equitable development and create opportunities for women and youth, furthering economic participation across the nation.

Amidst the increasing globalization trend, the GOSL now views the SME sector not only as one that requires “protection and promotion” but as a key driver for “growth and development

In a move aligned with this vision, Metropolitan Technologies Ltd. has partnered with People’s Micro Commerce Ltd. to extend critical support to SMEs.

This partnership seeks to offer accessible microcredit facilities specifically for essential workplace solutions. By providing financial relief on startup and operational costs, this collaboration offers SMEs funding for essential overheads and equipment at a concessional rate, with funds made available within 36 hours.

This quick financing framework is expected to significantly boost SME activity and entrepreneurial ventures within the region, fostering economic dynamism.

Michael Pradeep Amirthanayagam, Director and Chairman of People’s Micro Commerce, expressed commitment to offering SMEs competitive rates on workplace solutions purchased through Metropolitan. He highlighted that this partnership would empower SME customers to overcome financial constraints that often limit access to advanced technology and essential services.

Given that SMEs comprise over half of Sri Lanka’s employment base, the need for modern workplace technology is rising. However, limited funding options have posed significant barriers to growth.

Through this partnership, SMEs will gain access to a wide range of solutions from Metropolitan’s product line, including IT and office equipment like computers, printers, air conditioners, power generators, CCTV systems, and digital imaging devices.

Ali Asgar Roshanali, Director and CEO of Metropolitan Technologies, underscored that Metropolitan is the only specialist workplace solutions provider in Sri Lanka offering a comprehensive range of products, from IT to energy solutions.

Roshanali highlighted that the initiative, which includes product warranty and after-sales service, is part of Metropolitan’s 66-year legacy of quality service and aims to bridge the technology affordability gap, thus helping SMEs transition toward a more technologically advanced future.

Available throughout Sri Lanka at M Centre branches and 30 People’s Micro Commerce offices nationwide, this program offers SMEs and startups substantial support to drive their growth and competitive edge in the marketplace. Through this strategic collaboration, Metropolitan and People’s Micro Commerce are helping to lay the foundation for a prosperous and resilient SME sector in Sri Lanka.
