Minister Warns of Earlier-Than-Expected El Niño Peak as SL Braces for Extreme Weather
July 23, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka could experience the most severe effects of the current El Niño cycle sooner than previously anticipated, with the climate phenomenon now expected to reach its peak around November, Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi has warned.
Addressing a special media briefing at the Department of Government Information, the Minister said evolving weather patterns suggest the El Niño system has strengthened in recent months, increasing the likelihood of significant climatic disruptions across the country in the coming months.
According to the Minister, prolonged dry conditions are expected to dominate much of July, August and September, raising concerns over water availability, agriculture and power generation. This is likely to be followed by a period of intense rainfall between October and December, increasing the risk of flooding and other weather-related hazards in vulnerable areas.
Dr. Patabendi said the Government has begun strengthening coordination among relevant state institutions, disaster management agencies and media organisations to ensure timely dissemination of information and a more effective response to the challenges posed by the changing climate.
He stressed that El Niño is a global weather phenomenon with widespread consequences and that Sri Lanka is among many countries expected to feel its effects. As a result, preparedness and public cooperation will be essential in reducing the impact on communities and the economy.
The Minister urged the public to conserve both water and electricity, warning that prolonged heat and drought could place additional pressure on essential resources. He added that sectors heavily dependent on favourable weather conditions, particularly agriculture and related industries, could face production setbacks, potentially affecting incomes and employment.
He also called on the public to remain attentive to official weather advisories and to adopt responsible consumption habits, noting that collective action would play a vital role in helping the country navigate the challenges posed by the evolving El Niño conditions.
