No threat to national security – Acting IGP confirms
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya says the steps taken to strengthen the security of several places where foreigners were staying were based on a decision made after the Security Council met and analyzed the intelligence information received for about three weeks.
He said this during a news conference held at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police at Polonnaruwa.
He said, “With the beginning of the war in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, and by October 2024, the battles between these parties against terrorist activities had spread to various regions around the world. Because there was a suspicion that there would be some kind of threat to Sri Lanka and because the intelligence agencies did their infiltration duties very well, by October 07, we received intelligence information that they were preparing to launch some kind of attack targeting foreign nationals.
We discussed this at length in the Security Council, chaired by the President for three weeks. We got instructions for it. According to that instruction, foreigners, their frequent places of residence, and places where some foreigners perform their religious rites were provided security under a special security plan deploying personnel in police stations and the special task force.
In addition, intelligence officers were deployed in those places. We also contacted other methods of obtaining information. At the same time, we were in constant contact with the Consul Generals in this regard. By now, the security intelligence agencies have also made us aware of security instructions in the United States.
Accordingly, we implemented a special security plan for these security activities from yesterday (22). At the same time, the Security Council met this morning. It was discussed. The activities were carried out by the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security under the leadership of the commanders of the three armed forces, intelligence chiefs, the defence secretary and the President’s Secretary. According to the information and instructions received, the safety of the foreigners has been confirmed. At the same time, they are also satisfied with the security. We have informed the embassies of this. The embassies have also responded positively that the security work is going on properly.
As of now, there is no threat targeting local people. However, we urge the public to report any information or suspicious behaviour to the police. We have deployed adequate security measures and conducted raids and searches in the Arugambay region from 5:00 a.m. today (23rd), with no suspicious findings.
