President Announces Major Digitalisation Drive to Bring Government Services Online
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced plans to significantly expand Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure and transform the way citizens access government services, with a target of making around 80% of such services available remotely through mobile phones.
Speaking at a public meeting in Bulathsinhala, the President said the government would allocate Rs. 30 billion in next year’s Budget for the national digitalisation programme.
Under the initiative, citizens will be able to access a wide range of government services without having to visit government offices in person. Services related to birth and death certificates, land deeds and vehicle revenue licences are among those expected to be brought online.
The government also plans to strengthen mobile connectivity nationwide by constructing 1,000 new 4G towers over the next three years. The programme is intended to ensure comprehensive 4G coverage across the country.
Of the 1,000 planned towers, 250 are expected to be constructed next year as the first phase of the connectivity expansion.
President Dissanayake said the digitalisation programme forms part of a broader government development agenda that includes major infrastructure projects such as new expressways, railway electrification and other large-scale public investments.
The government expects the digital transformation to make public services more accessible and efficient while reducing the need for citizens to travel to government institutions to obtain essential services.
