The Director General of the Mahaweli Development Authority (MDA) has announced that heavy vehicles have been barred from using the road over the Kotmale Dam until blocked roads in the area are fully restored.

Only light vehicles are currently permitted to pass.

Addressing recent rumours about the dam’s sluice gates being opened, MDA Director General – H.M.J. Herath clarified that such claims are false.

He said the sluice gates are operated based on scientific data and that a new public notification system will be introduced in the future.

The discussion was attended by MP – Anushka Thilakaratne, the Nuwara Eliya District Secretary, and other officials.

Meanwhile, Nuwara Eliya District MP – Manjula Suraweera Arachchi stated that the MDA plans to resettle people on 55 hectares of land under its administration.

In addition, the Gampola-Nuwara Eliya road has reopened for light vehicles, while landslide-affected roads at Katukithula, Ramboda Ella, and Tawalantenne have been cleared, according to police reports.
