September 29, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka celebrated a landmark moment at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan after javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage secured the men’s title with a spectacular effort of 88.55 metres.
Pathirage saved his best performance for his final attempt, producing the decisive throw to move ahead of the field and claim the gold medal.
The victory marks Sri Lanka’s first gold medal of the Games and represents a significant milestone for the country’s athletics programme.
