The sale, storage and slaughter of cattle, buffalo and deer for meat has been prohibited in the Mannar District for a period of one week from yesterday (03), according to Pradeep Borelessa, President of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka.

A large number of farm animals, including cattle, have died in the Mannar District due to the disaster and the decision has been taken to prevent the meat of such animals from entering the market for human consumption.

However, the President of the Public Health Inspectors’ Union further stated that Public Health Inspectors across the island are closely monitoring whether the carcasses of animals that died due to the floods are being sold or transported for human consumption.

He requested the public to inform the Public Health Inspector of their area if they have any information regarding such incidents, or otherwise contact the disaster management unit of the Ministry of Health, which operates 24 hours, through the hotline 1926.
