
Chinese premier Li Qiang met with visiting Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today (Oct. 13) on bilateral ties.
The Sri Lankan prime minister is in Beijing to attend the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women which runs from Monday to Tuesday.
Hailing the deep friendship between the two countries, Li said China stands ready to work with Sri Lanka to carry forward the traditional friendship, enhance the alignment of development strategies of both countries, and advance cooperation in economy, trade, ports, green development, and other areas within the framework of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
The two sides should also strengthen people-to-people exchanges and strive to build a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future, Li noted.
The Chinese premier also pointed out that the two sides need to jointly implement the Global Governance Initiative, strengthen multilateral collaboration, and uphold international fairness and justice.
Amarasuriya said that Sri Lanka adheres to the one-China principle, supports the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and is willing to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with China to elevate Sri Lanka-China relations to a higher level.
Meeting with top political advisor Wang Huning
PM Amarasuriya also met with China’s top political advisor Wang Huning in Beijing today.
Wang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), recalled that in January this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Sri Lankan counterpart Anura Kumara Dissanayake made new strategic guidance for the development of China-Sri Lanka relations, and emphasized the importance of jointly building a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future.
China is willing to work with Sri Lanka to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation in various fields, and further advance the China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership featuring sincerity, mutual support and ever-lasting friendship, said Wang, adding that the CPPCC stands ready to make positive contributions in this regard.
Amarasuriya extended warm congratulations on the successful holding of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women and said President Xi’s speech delivered at the event demonstrates China’s outstanding leadership in advancing the development of global women’s cause and holds significant importance.
Sri Lanka attaches great importance to developing its relationship with China and is ready to work with China to deepen practical cooperation in areas such as economy, education, and tourism, so as to elevate the bilateral relations to a new level, said Amarasuriya.
