Sri Lanka Opens First Yuan Clearing Bank to Boost Trade with China

October 19, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has taken a significant step towards strengthening its financial links with China with the launch of its first official Chinese Yuan (RMB) clearing facility in Colombo, a development expected to simplify cross-border payments and support bilateral trade.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Labour Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr Anil Jayantha, alongside senior officials from the banking sector and representatives of the Sri Lankan and Chinese business communities.

The Colombo branch of the Bank of China has been appointed as the country’s official Yuan clearing bank, with authorisation from the People’s Bank of China. The arrangement creates a direct channel between Sri Lanka’s banking system and China’s financial network, allowing banks to process payments and settle transactions in the Chinese currency.

A major advantage of the new facility is that businesses trading with China will be able to settle eligible transactions directly in Yuan, potentially avoiding the additional conversion costs associated with first exchanging Sri Lankan rupees into US dollars and then into Chinese currency.

This could prove beneficial for Sri Lankan importers and exporters, particularly those handling regular transactions with Chinese suppliers and customers. Reducing the number of currency conversions may help businesses manage expenses more effectively and limit their exposure to exchange-rate fluctuations.

The clearing mechanism is also expected to improve the speed and efficiency of international payments by reducing dependence on intermediary banks and other third-party channels. More direct settlement arrangements could help minimise transaction delays, improve cash-flow management and make cross-border trade more convenient for businesses operating in both countries.

The initiative comes amid continuing efforts to deepen economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China. By facilitating the use of Yuan in commercial transactions, the new system could provide businesses with an additional settlement option and strengthen financial connectivity between the two markets.

Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wei Huaxiang, Bank of China Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Zhang Hui, and Central Bank of Sri Lanka Deputy Governor K.G.P. Sirikumara were among those present at the opening ceremony.

The establishment of the clearing bank represents a further development in bilateral financial cooperation, with its practical benefits likely to depend on the extent to which local banks and businesses adopt direct Yuan settlement for their trade and payment requirements.
