September 07, Colombo (LNW): A major regional health gathering has begun in Dili, Timor-Leste, with health ministers, senior officials and public health representatives from across the World Health Organisation’s South-East Asia Region meeting to discuss priorities affecting healthcare and regional cooperation.
Sri Lanka is represented at the 79th Session of the WHO South-East Asia Regional Committee by a high-level delegation headed by Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, who currently serves as Chair of the Regional Committee.
The delegation includes Director General of Health Services Specialist Dr Anil Jasinghe, Deputy Directors General of Health Services Dr S. Sreedharan and Dr S. M. Arnold, Senior Professor of Genetics and Biomedical Informatics Vajira H. W. Dissanayake, and Dr Janaki Vidanapathirana.
The meeting provides a platform for member states to review key developments in public health, exchange experiences and consider areas where closer regional collaboration could strengthen health systems. Senior WHO officials and health administrators are also taking part in discussions aimed at shaping the organisation’s priorities for the region.
Dr Jayatissa assumed the chairmanship at the 78th Session of the Regional Committee, held in Colombo in 2025. He will retain the position throughout the current meeting until the member states elect a new Chair.
The Dili session is expected to serve as an important forum for regional dialogue as countries work towards addressing emerging health challenges and strengthening cooperation across the South-East Asian region.
