October 25, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has attracted more than 1.8 million international visitors since the beginning of 2026, signalling continued interest in the island as a destination for overseas travellers.
Figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) show that the country received 1,813,484 tourists between January 01 and October 22 this year.
During the first 22 days of October alone, a total of 119,805 foreign visitors arrived in Sri Lanka, highlighting the ongoing flow of international travellers as the country moves towards the final months of the year.
India continued to dominate the arrivals figures, accounting for 482,944 visitors so far in 2026. The United Kingdom ranked second with 169,405 arrivals, followed by China with 120,980 and Germany with 102,920.
Indian travellers also maintained their lead in October, with 45,530 arrivals recorded from the neighbouring country between October 1 and 22. The figures underline India’s importance to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, supported by geographical proximity and established travel connections.
The latest statistics provide an encouraging indication of the sector’s continued activity, with visitors from several major international markets contributing to the overall total. Tourism remains an important source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, supporting businesses across the hospitality, transport, retail and leisure industries.
With the year not yet complete, the coming weeks will be important in determining how close the country comes to its annual tourism ambitions. Sustaining arrivals from established markets while attracting visitors from a wider range of countries will remain key to maintaining momentum in the months ahead.
