The Minister of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation, and Community Infrastructure Vijitha Herath emphasizes that the development projects implemented by the government with the aim of improving the socio-economic and cultural life of the hill country Tamil community, which makes a leading contribution to the national economy of the country, should be completed promptly. He has instructed the officials of the relevant institutions to provide the benefits of the projects to the people as soon as possible.
Special attention has been paid to it under the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation and Community Infrastructure.
In a discussion held recently regarding several development projects under the government institutions “New Village Authority for Plantation Zones, Plantation Human Development Trust and Soumyamurthy Thondaman Trust”, the officials of those institutions have also presented progress reports on the current status of the proposed programs for the construction of houses with the assistance of the Government of India and the community infrastructure projects that have been started under the Ministry’s provisions.
It has been revealed that by the end of the third quarter of 2024, the progress of the projects related to the construction of houses in relation to 2024 had exceeded the 90% mark. It has also been revealed that the percentage of housing projects in Hatton, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Kegalle districts is 91%, 90%, 92%, and 100%, respectively, and has reached the final stages.
In addition, the New Villages Development Authority for Plantation Region has prepared the activities related to the grant of 1060 house rights and land deeds. Of these, 563 deeds have been fully registered, and another 497 are being registered.
Minister Vijitha Herath has instructed to take the necessary steps to grant the real benefits that should be received at the public official level without contacting the political authority for the houses and land title deeds that have been completed by now.
It has been pointed out here that the New Village Authority for the plantation industry intervened to take a formal census of the houses of the hill plantation community. Mobile phone digital technology will be used for that. This is also expected to maintain a formal data pool for the first time regarding the houses, land, and infrastructure of the hill estate community. It will be used efficiently in future development programs.
In this discussion, Minister Vijitha Herath, who has instructed the officials to take necessary steps to resolve the coordination errors between the government agencies, has emphasized the need to complete these projects as soon as possible.
The shortcomings of the existing meal programs aimed at raising the nutritional status of the school children living in the houses of the plantation communitiy and the need to regularize them have been pointed out.
Likewise, Minister Vijitha Herath has given instructions to take necessary steps to organize special cultural events involving children and the community for Diwali, which is a special festival occasion for the Tamil people.
The need to participate in the cultural and professional courses of the newly built cultural centre in Hatton under the Soumya Murthy Thondaman Trust has also been pointed out. Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister Vijitha Herath has also emphasized the importance of introducing professional courses, including hotel service courses, to the youth in the hill country.
